Bears Ears National Monument is sacred land to native people in Utah. President Obama lawfully designated it for protection in 2016, but now President Trump and Republican leaders in Utah and elsewhere are trying to reverse that action and open this magnificent land up to energy development. Trump refers to Obama’s action as “a federal land grab.” Since virtually 100 percent of this continent’s land was “grabbed” from the native people who lived here for millennia, it’s a peculiar way to phrase federal protection of those lands from industrial development.
