In a modern day browser, people can view videos, listen to audio, and read books and texts, all with a single click. But with software, especially vintage software, it's nowhere near as easy. Internet Archive, together with a huge volunteer community and Mozilla, has prototyped JSMESS, which emulates hundreds of computers and consoles. Running in pure javascript, JSMESS can open in seconds to run programs from the last 40 years, giving full access to all manner of games, applications and computer art in many browsers. We propose leveraging the active community that has participated in the pilot to build JSMESS further--to leapfrog in speed, reliability and ubiquity--forever unlocking access to the history of computers, programs and apps.
