When you are try something, there are couple of things that can happen. It might work (success) or it might not work (failure). What does that mean ? Does success mean you should try more of it or failure mean you shouldn’t try it again ?

Not really. Here is the fact.

Success could mean it worked now. There is no guarantee that it will work again. It could have been pure randomness that made it work. Trying it again and again is destined to failure. This is in sync with the problems in Lamarck’s theory. You can’t just learn that something works and keep repeating it with certainty.

Similarly failure could also be caused by different reasons. Most of these are unknown or randomly influenced by environment.

What can you do? Try doing the same thing again and again, no matter whether it works or not. NO. That is not gonna work too. Then you are just taking the seed out of random. Environmental randomness needs some seed. Some starting point. So pick something random yourself and provide that as seed. Let it do its magic.

If it works, should I try it again. Not necessarily. You might have found something more interesting after that. Or if you did’t find anything interesting, you can always try it again with a little bit of random change.

But what matters is that what you are learning from it. I am not talking about learning what works and what doesn’t. I am talking about the skill of doing something.

Success or Failure, you learn a skill. Adding new skills will increase your personal randomness. You have more choices now. You can try more things. Mix and match your skills and you can end up creating something completely new and it might have a better chance of success.
