This week the Drug Enforcement Administration approved a clinical trial to treat anxiety in terminally ill patients with the psychedelic MDMA, better known by its street names ecstasy and molly.Decades after psychedelics were criminalized and research on them outlawed, studies are now underway to find whether LSD, MDMA and “magic mushrooms” can treat addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety in the terminally ill. The results are, as one researcher put it, “mind-blowing.” Here’s how psychedelics made a comeback.
