Our view of the medieval world is a mixed one: it is austere and vehemently religious, dominated by dour, moralising ecclesiastics, and it is wild and lawless, with widespread barbarism and strange, incomprehensible beliefs. Manuscript marginalia sit perfectly at the intersection of the two.
