After reading Mark Zuckerberg’s recent comments about the company’s stance on identity, I am almost shaking with excitement. I feel like I’ve waited years for this day, and frankly thought it may never come.

Two months ago I said a huge opportunity awaited those who dared to go where Facebook and Google wouldn’t. Who’d a thunk that company would be… Facebook? That the standard bearer for what most people think of as “online identity” would reconsider its own position is both shocking and encouraging.

As someone who has advocated for anonymity and ephemerality for the past ten plus years, I am extremely excited. I see a lot of my own convictions represented in Evan Spiegel’s recent keynote at the AXS Partner Summit, and hope Snapchat continues to succeed at bringing these ideas into the mainstream. All we need now is for Google to wake up and actually innovate with Plus, and we’ll truly have a party!

The time for reimagining modern identity has finally come.
